The jewel in our crown is Lady Sings it Better, a four woman cabaret troupe, who sing songs penned and sung by men, turning them upside in a feminist, high-femme explosion of sound. This is Michael Jackson, AC/DC, The Beatles, Nine Inch Nails, Leonard Cohen, Usher, Midnight Oil, Silverchair and the Rolling Stones as you’ve never heard them before; masculinity mixed up in soaring female vocals.
With backgrounds in varying musical styles, from opera and musical theatre to jazz, folk and pop, these musicians create surprising and playful renditions of masculine anthems, inviting the audience to discover new ideas in the lyric and think about how a song can change meaning when sung in a female voice.
Lady is fronted by Artistic Director Maeve Marsden, Anna Martin, Libby Wood and Chandra Franken, and has employed amazing composers and musical directors, including Tim Hansen, Chris Williams and Dr Joe Twist. Our talented musicians include pianist, Hayden Barltrop, drummer, Lauren Allison and bassist Hannah James, the 2011 recipient of the Jann Rutherford Memorial Award for best up and coming female jazz musician. Our vocal director is leading Australian voice expert, Dr Cate Madill. Learn more about the Lady team at ladysingsitbetter.com.
