About blackcat productions

blackcat productions is creative duo, Phoebe Meredith and Maeve Marsden, who have worked together in happy harmony since they were students at Charles Sturt University in NSW’s central west. We aim to nurture creative female talent with a particular focus on cabaret and live music events. We believe in creating high quality popular entertainment, which pushes boundaries and expectations around gender and sexuality in a format and style accessible to a wide range of people, young and old, queer and straight, men and women, alternative and conservative... With complimentary skills, the pair has produced both theatre and cabaret, but their heart lies in the mix of music and laughter of shows like their current project, Lady Sings it Better. What began with two women keeping busy in Bathurst, has now become a collective of performers, musicians, designers and crew who all work together to make quality live entertainment and support Sydney’s independent arts scene. The company bring a rich mix of skills and experience in cabaret, jazz, musical theatre, classical and pop music, as well as theatre, stand up and improvisation. Blackcat Productions are committed to diversity, creativity, nice wine and not taking themselves too seriously.

Our Sydney Comedy Festival debut is TOMORROW NIGHT!

Tomorrow night, we find out the answer to one of life’s greatest questions – is Lady Sings it Better funny enough to be included in the Sydney Comedy Festival line up? The programmers thought so, which is why we’ll be hitting the stage at the Seymour Centre at 9.15pm.

There are still tickets available so you can book online or just show up for door tix! We’re on Friday and Saturday night.

Save the Red Rattler

Lady Sings it Better at the Red Rattler

The first Lady Sings it Better gig EVER!

In August 2009, we gave birth to Lady Sings it Better in a little not-for-profit arts space in Marrickville. Since then, we’ve performed at other gigs there, we’ve held fundraiser events there, we ran a wonderful sold out panel discussion for 55Upitty there this Mardi Gras, and we’ve danced the night away at countless other events.

The Red Rattler is, quite simply, one of the best spaces for artists to work in Sydney. They are accommodating, open, flexible and without a doubt, the most cost effective. More than that, in a sea of venues decked out like RSLs, the Rattler looks GOOD. They have designed a beautiful, accessible space that does half the work of putting on a great gig for you.

SONY DSCSo, why am I ranting about the Red Rattler and how awesome it is? Because they need our help in order to keep doing what they do. They need to raise at least $40K in order to buy a share in the building it lives in and become a sustainable community-owned space and they are running a crowdfuning campaign on pozible to do so.

They are a quarter of the way there. Knowing how amazingly generous Lady Sings it Better supporters are, we think we can push that to halfway! Check out the pozible campaign and video and please donate to save the Red Rattler!

Calling all Marrickville Artists

blackcat productions are thrilled to be producing an exciting event, Cabaret in the ‘ville, for the Open Marrickville Festival. Cabaret in the ‘ville will bring together all walks of life for an evening for music, food, storytelling, comedy and magic, on June 28 at the Red Rattler.

We are calling all artists living or working in the Marrickville Local Govt Area (check your local govt area here) to submit proposals to perform or exhibit their work as part of the event. This is a paid opportunity for both emerging and established artists. Details are below. Please email proposals to maeve@blackcatproductions.com.au by Friday May 3rd 2013.Cabaret in the 'ville_landscape

Who we are looking for: Musicians, comedians, magicians, circus performers, dancers, choirs, cooks, storytellers, crafters, activists and visual artists who live or work in the Marrickville Local Govt Area.

What we want you to do: Perform or exhibit work at Cabaret in the ‘ville that demonstrates your experiences of living in contemporary Marrickville. We are casting a wide net, seeking submissions from all sorts of artists. but we are particularly keen on artists who embody the cabaret spirit, a fusion of music, comedy, politics and story telling.

What we need from you: You will need to fill out this Application form and submit a one page proposal, explaining what your performance, exhibition or participation in the event would involve. We know that applications can be a beast, so we aren’t going to stipulate loads of guidelines, but please answer the following in your submission:

  • What is your artform and your experience performing or exhibiting your work?
  • How will your performance / exhibition / story / presentation relate to the theme of living and working in contemporary Marrickville?
  • How does your work relate to the traditions of cabaret?
  • How long would your work take to perform or set up in the space?

You can also submit photos, audio or video of your work.

In summary, send in the Application form, a one page proposal and any support material (photos, video, audio) by Friday May 3rd.

If you have any questions, feel free to get in touch on maeve@blackcatproductions.com.au

Winners are Grinners

Congratulations to current and former Lady team members, Lauren Allison and Dr Joe Twist!

Dr Joe shakes his maracasOur much loved former MD, Joe, has scored himself a prestigious APRA Professional Development Award. One of only 8 successful musicians, Joe won in the Film and Television category. Time to write a Lady movie for him to score? C’mon, Spiceworld was a MASTERPIECE! In all seriousness, this is an amazing achievement (with a prize pack worth a cool $30K), and we all want to congratulate Joe and encourage him to come home and visit soon.

Meanwhile, back in Oz, one of the many bands featuring our drummer, Lauren, Larger than Lions, won the Discovered at Marble Bar Band Comp. They will be playing at Marble Bar on Wednesday nights for the next two months!
