blackcat lounge 2013 a great success

I am not going to lie to you. This time, last year, I was pretty stressed. Our inaugural Sydney Mardi Gras cabaret season, blackcat lounge 2012, had many wins – the shows were of an extremely high calibre, we got some great reviews, we worked with some wonderful artists and learned loads about communication and risk taking and community.

But ticket sales were not as high as we’d hoped, and we lost quite a bit of money on our little gamble. Popular opinion would have me pretend this weren’t the case. I should be shouting our successes from the rooftops in the hope of grant funding and awards! But it would be dishonest to pretend that emerging artists and producers don’t make mistakes.

What’s wonderful, though, is when we can learn from those mistakes. This year, Phoebe and I considered the variables that caused last year’s season to do badly financially, despite its creative quality. We shortened the season, we worked with less artists, moved venues and changed our marketing plan.

We are pleased to say that all shows either sold out or sold well, we canceled no shows and we saw many happy patrons leaving The Factory Floor, having enjoyed a whole lot of quality music. Frisky and Mannish blew the roof off, Lady Sings it Better showed Sydney what we learned over in the old country, Brendan Maclean launched his amazing single, Stupid and Maxine Kauter Band slayed Prince’s Purple Rain (in a good way!) and introduced us to Cherry On Top (their talented support act).

Thanks to all the artists we work with for giving us another shot at producing this event and delivering such killer shows, to audiences for booking tickets by the hundreds (we do love people who pre-book), and to The Factory and Century Venues.

See you again in 2014!

The week ahead!

Well, we kickedLady Sings it Better at Fair Day off the queer silly season yesterday with a fun set at Mardi Gras Fair Day. We sweated our little hearts out in the baking sun, then as the rain arrived, we trotted home for a rehearsal. Rock star life, kids. This is it.

This week is huge, huge, huge.

The blackcat endorsed programming starts on Tuesday night with The Aurora Group‘s Mardi Gras offering, Fat Tuesday. This charity event raises much needed funds for important LGBT organisations, such as Twenty10 and the Gay and Lesbian Counselling Service. Frisky and Mannish are headlining, the food and wine will be amazing and there may be a handful of tickets left. Details here.

Wednesday night, blackcat lounge opens with a bang. The amazing UK cabaret duo, Frisky and Mannish will blow the roof off The Factory. Tickets are limited so book them here!

Thursday night, Lady Sings it Better perform our first full show since we got back from Edinburgh, which means we’ll be eschewing all of our normal banter in order to praise ourselves for having been on an international tour. The show is sold out, but there will be a handful of standing room door tickets available, and there are still a few tickets up for grabs on Feb 23 and 24.

Friday night, Phoebe, Anna and Maeve are off to Women Say Something to be fangirls, supporting Maeve’s mum, Teresa (check out her website, 55Upitty, launching Feb 21 at The Red Rattler), as well as Stella Young, McKenzie Raymond, Claudia Karvan and a bunch of other babes.

Then Saturday, the ever cool, Maxine Kauter Band will take over the Factory Floor, playing new originals and covers of famous GLBT musicians, HOMAGE style. It’ll be hot. Come. Book.

Then on Sunday, we rest, because it is God’s day. Or, because we’ll be fucking exhausted.

Happy Mardi Gras!

Frisky and Mannish to open blackcat lounge!

Frisky and Mannish

We are so excited to announce that Frisky and Mannish will be opening blackcat lounge on February 13th at The Factory. We saw this amazing pair in Edinburgh and when we realised they were coming to Australia but NOT Sydney, we quickly snaffled them up.

So what’s the blurb?

School? College? Job? Yawn. Life isn’t about spreadsheets*, it’s about joy and laughter and pop music. Frisky and Mannish, London’s resident experts of pop hermeneutics and ‘fully-blown superstars’ (TimeOut), are back in Perth to blow the bloody roof off. They’ll be letting their hair down, and letting rip.
* Our manager, Phoebe, would like it stated for the record that life IS about spreadsheets, thankyouverymuch.

Question: What are you waiting for? BOOK TICKETS HERE.

Everything’s coming up Lady’s!

Now, I don’t want to tempt fate and potentially jinx myself, but things are pretty sweet at Lady HQ at the moment.

We got some pretty damn awesome editorial about winning two ArtsHub Awards and our ridiculous photo of me and Phoebe high fiving got used in the article about all of the ArtsHub award winners.

Our Mardi Gras blackcat lounge season is on sale and tickets are already flying out the door for our three Lady shows. Lady is playing The Factory Floor on February 14, 23 and 24 so book tickets now on The Factory website.

If you need convincing, bear in mind that we’ll be showcasing a LOAD of new material. Our new MD is putting the finishing touches on his first arrangement for the group and we’ve been building a pretty damn awesome mash up over the past few rehearsals. Let us just say this: Elvis. The Presets. Gnarls Barkley. The Rolling Stones.

On top of these, we’ve entered the world of barbershop courtesy of one of Libby’s genius interpretations, we’re bringing back our most complex vocal arrangement ever (Blister in the Sun, Tim Hansen style), we’ve gone creepy-circus-style with another well known tune, oh and I suppose we’ll sing that damn medley about horses…

BOOK YOUR TICKETS ALREADY.

blackcat lounge season highlights

Before time rushes away from me and our little cabaret season is but a distant memory, I thought I’d youtube-spam you with some of my favourite blackcat lounge moments.

The season had highs and lows, torrential rain and sunshine, tiny paper boats and pink balloons, big crowds and small. But one consistent wonder was the talent of the artists we assembled at The Sidetrack. I was thrilled to watch wonderful performance after wonderful performance.

Here are a few of my faves:
