Our Sydney Comedy Festival debut is TOMORROW NIGHT!

Tomorrow night, we find out the answer to one of life’s greatest questions – is Lady Sings it Better funny enough to be included in the Sydney Comedy Festival line up? The programmers thought so, which is why we’ll be hitting the stage at the Seymour Centre at 9.15pm.

There are still tickets available so you can book online or just show up for door tix! We’re on Friday and Saturday night.

Calling all Marrickville Artists

blackcat productions are thrilled to be producing an exciting event, Cabaret in the ‘ville, for the Open Marrickville Festival. Cabaret in the ‘ville will bring together all walks of life for an evening for music, food, storytelling, comedy and magic, on June 28 at the Red Rattler.

We are calling all artists living or working in the Marrickville Local Govt Area (check your local govt area here) to submit proposals to perform or exhibit their work as part of the event. This is a paid opportunity for both emerging and established artists. Details are below. Please email proposals to maeve@blackcatproductions.com.au by Friday May 3rd 2013.Cabaret in the 'ville_landscape

Who we are looking for: Musicians, comedians, magicians, circus performers, dancers, choirs, cooks, storytellers, crafters, activists and visual artists who live or work in the Marrickville Local Govt Area.

What we want you to do: Perform or exhibit work at Cabaret in the ‘ville that demonstrates your experiences of living in contemporary Marrickville. We are casting a wide net, seeking submissions from all sorts of artists. but we are particularly keen on artists who embody the cabaret spirit, a fusion of music, comedy, politics and story telling.

What we need from you: You will need to fill out this Application form and submit a one page proposal, explaining what your performance, exhibition or participation in the event would involve. We know that applications can be a beast, so we aren’t going to stipulate loads of guidelines, but please answer the following in your submission:

  • What is your artform and your experience performing or exhibiting your work?
  • How will your performance / exhibition / story / presentation relate to the theme of living and working in contemporary Marrickville?
  • How does your work relate to the traditions of cabaret?
  • How long would your work take to perform or set up in the space?

You can also submit photos, audio or video of your work.

In summary, send in the Application form, a one page proposal and any support material (photos, video, audio) by Friday May 3rd.

If you have any questions, feel free to get in touch on maeve@blackcatproductions.com.au

Sydney Comedy Festival two weeks away!

Sydney Comedy Festival is on its way, with a huge program of amazing artists taking over the city. But enough about them, we want you to come see US! We are performing just two shows at the Seymour Centre, April 26 & 27. We’ll be introducing you to our new 4-singer line up, and there’ll be more awkward humour, more appalling dancing and more laughs than ever before.

Book your tickets here (we’re already about 30% booked out). Even if you aren’t coming, please tell friends who you think might be keen by sharing our facebook event.

If you can’t make our Sydney Comedy Festival shows, we have a few guest spot gigs coming up, a mix of our stuff and the odd tribute show coming up (*cough* Dusty Springfield *cough* The Spice Girls), so check out the Lady Sings it Better gigs page and stalk us throughout April and May!

Lady Sings it Better

A fabulous start to blackcat lounge

The first week of blackcat lounge was wonderful, so thanks to everyone who schlepped to the Factory to join us! We opened with w bang on Wednesday with the amazing Frisky and Mannish who got so excited to be in Sydney that they fell off the stage!

Thursday was packed out for Lady Sings it Better’s first full show since Edinburgh. The new material seemed to go down a treat and we can’t wait to do it all again this week. Note that, although Friday and Saturday are sold out, we are selling door tickets as there are always a few no shows. If you missed out, head to the Factory at 7.30pm.

On Saturday, Maxine Kauter Band delivered a killer set, supported by Cherry on Top. I hadn’t seen CoT before – what a voice! For me, Purple Rain was a highlight, when MK put down the guitar and the B rocked out.

We’re at it again this week with Brendan Maclean’s almost-sold-out launch of his new single, Stupid (check out the awesome clip below) and two more Lady shows.

Happy Mardi Gras!

Happy (belated) New Year!

We have so much almost-announce-able news that I’ve been holding off blogging til I can share it all. But time waits for no blog, so I’ll write a little update now and a bigger one later!

Firstly, we welcomed the BBC into our rehearsals last week for BBC World’s Fast Track special on the lead up to Mardi Gras! We sang a few of our new songs and I chatted to the interviewer about blackcat lounge and my views on last year’s Mardi Gras name change.

We are super excited about our Mardi Gras season with Maxine Kauter Band AND Brendan Maclean both launching new work! We love these kids (as I’m sure you know), so book tickets to their shows asap, before the VERY exciting billboard with our faces on it goes up at The Factory. No one will be able to resist our sexy gay faces, so get to it!

Soon, you’ll be hearing all about blackcat productions’ participation in Marrickville Council’s Open Marrickville Festival, which we were thrilled to receive a grant for. We’ve got exciting cabaret plans in the pipeline, so stay tuned!

Oh, and sales for our Lady Sings it Better Adelaide season are coming along nicely. Book for it, ok?

If you need any incentive, check out our new youtube montage, complete with Edinburgh footage…
