A fabulous start to blackcat lounge

The first week of blackcat lounge was wonderful, so thanks to everyone who schlepped to the Factory to join us! We opened with w bang on Wednesday with the amazing Frisky and Mannish who got so excited to be in Sydney that they fell off the stage!

Thursday was packed out for Lady Sings it Better’s first full show since Edinburgh. The new material seemed to go down a treat and we can’t wait to do it all again this week. Note that, although Friday and Saturday are sold out, we are selling door tickets as there are always a few no shows. If you missed out, head to the Factory at 7.30pm.

On Saturday, Maxine Kauter Band delivered a killer set, supported by Cherry on Top. I hadn’t seen CoT before – what a voice! For me, Purple Rain was a highlight, when MK put down the guitar and the B rocked out.

We’re at it again this week with Brendan Maclean’s almost-sold-out launch of his new single, Stupid (check out the awesome clip below) and two more Lady shows.

Happy Mardi Gras!

Frisky and Mannish to open blackcat lounge!

Frisky and Mannish

We are so excited to announce that Frisky and Mannish will be opening blackcat lounge on February 13th at The Factory. We saw this amazing pair in Edinburgh and when we realised they were coming to Australia but NOT Sydney, we quickly snaffled them up.

So what’s the blurb?

School? College? Job? Yawn. Life isn’t about spreadsheets*, it’s about joy and laughter and pop music. Frisky and Mannish, London’s resident experts of pop hermeneutics and ‘fully-blown superstars’ (TimeOut), are back in Perth to blow the bloody roof off. They’ll be letting their hair down, and letting rip.
* Our manager, Phoebe, would like it stated for the record that life IS about spreadsheets, thankyouverymuch.

Question: What are you waiting for? BOOK TICKETS HERE.

Happy (belated) New Year!

We have so much almost-announce-able news that I’ve been holding off blogging til I can share it all. But time waits for no blog, so I’ll write a little update now and a bigger one later!

Firstly, we welcomed the BBC into our rehearsals last week for BBC World’s Fast Track special on the lead up to Mardi Gras! We sang a few of our new songs and I chatted to the interviewer about blackcat lounge and my views on last year’s Mardi Gras name change.

We are super excited about our Mardi Gras season with Maxine Kauter Band AND Brendan Maclean both launching new work! We love these kids (as I’m sure you know), so book tickets to their shows asap, before the VERY exciting billboard with our faces on it goes up at The Factory. No one will be able to resist our sexy gay faces, so get to it!

Soon, you’ll be hearing all about blackcat productions’ participation in Marrickville Council’s Open Marrickville Festival, which we were thrilled to receive a grant for. We’ve got exciting cabaret plans in the pipeline, so stay tuned!

Oh, and sales for our Lady Sings it Better Adelaide season are coming along nicely. Book for it, ok?

If you need any incentive, check out our new youtube montage, complete with Edinburgh footage…

So much to talk about: Teresa Savage at Women Say Something

Both of my mothers are packed with feminist inspiration and I could happily write thousands of words on how ace they are. This week, though, I got to read some wonderful words someone else wrote about Teresa when she was announced as a panelist at the next Women Say Something event.

Phoebe and I are thrilled to be producing the other Mardi Gras event Teresa will be speaking at, the launch of 55Upitty, a website Teresa’s built with Viv McGregor (our fabulous photographer). 55Upitty celebrates older LGBTI women, providing stories and history that I was privileged enough to grow up with, but that many young LGBTI women have to seek out once they discover the queer community. It’s a wonderful project, so you should probably book tickets to the event

Anyway, here’s Teresa’s Women Say Something bio. It’s pretty damn good:

In November 2012 Teresa was awarded the Edna Ryan Grand Stirrer Award for “inciting others to challenge the status quo”.

Teresa has been a feminist activist her whole adult life. In England, she worked with homeless women, and then as a school librarian providing a safe place for gay and lesbian young people. She was a founder member of a women’s housing co-operative, and campaigned against restrictions to abortion. She was a member of (probably) the very first lesbian mothers group in London, and with her partner had children at a time when lesbian families were very unusual, but discrimination against lesbian mothers and their children was not.

Teresa came to Australia in 1988 and was one of the earliest people granted citizenship as the same sex partner of an Australian citizen. She established a lesbian mothers group and supported other lesbians and their children. She was a member of the Bluetongues lesbian writers group, writing and publishing about lesbian issues.

Teresa coached women and girls soccer for Balmain for over ten years. She specialised in training women over forty who had never played before, and got great pleasure in seeing women develop soccer skills, and gain a confidence in their own ability that they were then able to transfer to their lives more broadly.

Teresa has been a mentor for many skilled migrant women who come to this country and then are unable to find work that matches their skills. In her capacity as a senior manager in the NSW Public Service, Teresa also lobbies for equity in the workplace, and supports younger women to achieve their career aspirations.

Teresa is an ambassador for “This is Oz”, the online anti-homophobia campaign run by ACON. She regularly runs fundraising events for women’s causes. She is currently advising Leichhardt Council on providing more services for the local LGBTI community. Teresa’s commitment to living her feminist values includes a 35 year commitment to being a vegetarian.

Teresa is the Founding Director of 55Upitty, an online interview and photography project that celebrates the older LGBTI woman. 55Upitty will be launched in the 2013 Mardi Gras season.

Everything’s coming up Lady’s!

Now, I don’t want to tempt fate and potentially jinx myself, but things are pretty sweet at Lady HQ at the moment.

We got some pretty damn awesome editorial about winning two ArtsHub Awards and our ridiculous photo of me and Phoebe high fiving got used in the article about all of the ArtsHub award winners.

Our Mardi Gras blackcat lounge season is on sale and tickets are already flying out the door for our three Lady shows. Lady is playing The Factory Floor on February 14, 23 and 24 so book tickets now on The Factory website.

If you need convincing, bear in mind that we’ll be showcasing a LOAD of new material. Our new MD is putting the finishing touches on his first arrangement for the group and we’ve been building a pretty damn awesome mash up over the past few rehearsals. Let us just say this: Elvis. The Presets. Gnarls Barkley. The Rolling Stones.

On top of these, we’ve entered the world of barbershop courtesy of one of Libby’s genius interpretations, we’re bringing back our most complex vocal arrangement ever (Blister in the Sun, Tim Hansen style), we’ve gone creepy-circus-style with another well known tune, oh and I suppose we’ll sing that damn medley about horses…

BOOK YOUR TICKETS ALREADY.
