After the success of blackcat lounge 2012, our Mardi Gras cabaret season, we couldn’t wait to do it all again in 2013.
blackcat lounge isn’t drag and it ain’t burlesque. It’s playful, concept-driven, gutsy live music, performed by some of Sydney’s best queer musicians and their collaborators. We have three amazing events for you this Sydney Mardi Gras, all 8pm at The Factory Floor.
Lady Sings it Better, February 14, 23, 24
Smashing expectations one soaring harmony at a time, six women take on the world’s most famous male musicians and reinvent them as surprising, bawdy cabaret. After a critically acclaimed season at the 2012 Edinburgh Fringe, Lady Sings it Better are back with a bunch of fabulous new songs (and a few old favourites). “Comic cabaret gold!” **** The Scotsman
Maxine Kauter Band, February 16
Sydney’s premier queer alt-pop rockers, Maxine Kauter Band, have been loving up audiences for years now. Likened to The Cowboy Junkies, Neko Case and Mazzy Star, Maxine Kauter Band have established a reputation for delivering a devastatingly great live show. If you like your music melodic and literate you will like this band. If you like music that makes you think of loves lost and won while you tap your feet then this is the band for you.
Brendan Maclean, February 22
A sell-out hit at Mardi Gras 2012, Brendan Maclean just keeps getting better. Brendan brings with him the energy and spirit of a new generation of artists. Encapsulating the stories of folk with the command and fireworks of pop, Brendan’s flamboyant yet authentic live performance has been compared to Rufus Wainwright, Patrick Wolf and Panic at The Disco, and he’s performed with Savage Garden, Lanie Lane, Claire Bowditch and Kate Miller-Heidke, on stage or in the studio. Brendan will be celebrating the release of his first record since 2010, backed by his acclaimed band-mates, debuting new material for Mardi Gras.
